Aging in Place: Smart, Accessible Renovations for a Safer Home - with BuildAble

Most of us want to stay in the homes we love for as long as possible. But as our needs change, our homes may need to change too. In this practical session, Kyla MacGinnis, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Professor at the University of Ottawa, and co-founder of BuildABLE — will explore how thoughtful home renovations can support safety, independence, and long-term well-being. Kyla bridges healthcare and construction to help homeowners make informed, proactive decisions about aging in place.

Participants will learn:

  • Modifications that significantly improve safety and reduce fall risk
  • Smart renovation strategies that adapt to changing mobility and health needs
  • How to prioritize upgrades based on lifestyle and budget
  • Funding options, tax credits, and grants available to Canadian homeowners
  • Common renovation pitfalls — and how to avoid them

This session is designed specifically for older adults who want to maintain independence, reduce risk, and future-proof their homes — without sacrificing comfort or style. Attendees will leave with practical knowledge, clear next steps, and greater confidence in planning accessible renovations.

The content will be presented in English, however bilingual participation is encouraged. La présentation se fera en anglais, mais la participation dans les deux langues officielles est encouragée.
