As summer temperatures and heat waves continue to increase across Canada, understanding how heat affects our bodies has never been more important, especially for older adults, families, and young children. Join Dr. Glen Kenny, Director of the Human and Environmental Physiology Research Unit at the University of Ottawa, for an engaging and informative presentation on how to stay safe during extreme summer heat.
Drawing on decades of research and recent studies conducted in partnership with Health Canada, Dr. Kenny will discuss why heat can become dangerous, how aging changes the body’s ability to cope with heat, and the practical steps people can take to protect themselves, their families, friends, and grandchildren during hot weather. The presentation will also address common misconceptions about heat, indoor overheating, hydration, fans and cooling strategies, and recognizing early warning signs of heat-related illness.
This accessible and educational talk will provide evidence-based advice and practical tips to help Canadians stay healthy, active, and safe during the summer months.
The content will be presented in English, however bilingual participation is encouraged. La présentation se fera en anglais, mais la participation dans les deux langues officielles est encouragée.
