Too Hot to Learn, Too Hot to Play: How Heat Extremes Are Shaping the Future of Children and Youth
As grandparents who may be caring for your grandchildren during the summer months, you play a vital role in helping them stay safe, comfortable, and healthy during extreme heat.
Rising temperatures and more frequent heatwaves are creating increasingly hazardous conditions for children and youth in Canada. Overheated classrooms, playgrounds, and after-school programs are threatening children’s health, concentration, emotional well-being, and learning.
Children are particularly vulnerable because their bodies warm faster, cool less efficiently, and they often cannot recognize early signs of overheating. Even moderate heat can impair attention, memory, and emotional regulation, making it difficult to engage in school or play.
In this presentation, we discuss these challenges and why it is important to take action now to protect our children and youth, who will define Canada’s future.
