We spend a large portion of our time sleeping, but this is far from an unproductive state! During sleep, many biological processes take place to restore the mind and body and help us function at our best. Showcasing recent research findings, this session will explore some of the mysteries of sleep and offer an overview of how sleep is connected to various aspects of mental, physical, and cognitive health. Sleep typically changes drastically across the lifespan. As such, we will discuss what expectations we should have about normal age-related changes as compared to signs that it may be time to get some help. Join in to get some tips to facilitate healthy sleep and information about evidence-based sleep treatments.
Meet our presenter:
Dr. Rébecca Robillard, PhD, is a clinical neuropsychologist and Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa School of Psychology. She leads clinical sleep research at the University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research at the Royal. Her team investigates the interactions between mental health, the sleeping brain and the sleeping heart, with particular attention to mood disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder. Their work also seeks to optimize sleep insomnia and chronobiological interventions for people with mental disorders. By supplementing standard clinical care with extended sleep assessment and treatment options, her team hopes to find new ways of improving quality of life and accelerate recovery in people facing sleep and mental health challenges.
The content will be presented in English, however bilingual participation is encouraged. La présentation se fera en anglais, mais la participation dans les deux langues officielles est encouragée.
